Michael Petrov cello

Brahms - Variations on a Theme of Haydn
Shostakovich - Cello Concerto
Dvořák - Symphony No.8

Welcome to our opening concert of the season. Brahms’s
influence on Dvořák is well documented. So tonight we will
feature a classic work by both composers. We open with
Brahms’s wonderful Variations on a Theme by Haydn. This work
revels in the forms of the past and Brahms’s passion for these
structures. Composed in 1889 and premièred the following year,
Dvořák’s Symphony No.8 has a lyrical and sprightly outlook that is
full of vitality and inspiration drawn from his beloved Bohemian
folk music. We are extremely pleased to welcome Young Classical
Artists Trust performer, Michael Petrov to perform Shostakovich’s
Cello Concerto No.1. Michael Petrov has been wowing audiences
internationally with his “meltingly warm, smooth tone and easy
virtuosity.” He has performed with many of the top classical
orchestras to rave reviews. A rising star not to be missed.
