Brahms - Variations on a Theme of Haydn
Shostakovich - Cello Concerto
Dvořák - Symphony No.8

Welcome to our opening concert of the season. Brahms’s influence on Dvořák is well documented. So tonight we will feature a classic work by both composers. We open with Brahms’s wonderful Variations on a Theme by Haydn. This work revels in the forms of the past and Brahms’s passion for these structures. Composed in 1889 and premièred the following year, Dvořák’s Symphony No.8 has a lyrical and sprightly outlook that is full of vitality and inspiration drawn from his beloved Bohemian folk music.

Sadly, our soloist for the November 24th concert, Michael Petrov has had to pull out of this concert due to an injury to his hand. We are very lucky to have cellist Jamal Aliyev stepping in to play the exciting Shostakovich Cello Concerto with us.
