A 21st Century Symphony

Our season finale is a belated 70th birthday celebration for the orchestra after Covid restrictions forced its cancellation last season.

We are deeply honoured to welcome the internationally respected musician Tai Murray, who joins us to perform Tchaikovsky’s Violin Concerto. Tai has performed with many of the world’s leading orchestras and received the viewers’ prize (for her performance of The Lark Ascending) at the BBC Proms in 2018. Expect fireworks! We open with David Heath’s powerfully evocative Rhapsody for Orchestra. Commissioned by the BBC Concert Orchestra and first performed in 2002, Rhapsody combines Heath’s love of jazz & rock traditions via two hyper-romantic sections

We close our concert with Shirley J. Thompson’s glorious work, New Nation Rising: A 21st Century Symphony. Joining us are soloists and choir members from across Yorkshire, dhol drummers and a rapper, freestyling; this promises to be a tumultuous and unforgettable close to the season. The symphony is based on the structure of Beethoven’s Symphony No.9 and has the same lifeaffirming message. This is a concert not to be missed.
